How our practice tests compare to the real ISEE

A practice test is only useful if it feels like the real thing. So we measured every full-length test on this site against the official ISEE, level by level. Here is what we found.

How to read the numbers

  • Vocabulary: how common the answer-choice words are. A lower number means rarer, harder words.
  • Reading grade level: the school grade a passage is written for. Higher means harder.
  • Passage length and words per question: how much a student has to read.
  • “Compare A vs B”: the share of Quantitative Reasoning questions that ask you to compare two quantities. The Lower Level does not use this type.
  • On par means the test falls inside the range the official tests themselves vary across.

How we check

  • The benchmark is the official ERB practice material only: 3 official practice tests and 3 “What to Expect” guides (730 questions and 29 reading passages).
  • Every question is solved a second time by an independent checker who never sees the answer key, and any disagreement is fixed before the test goes live.
  • The numbers are medians per test, so one odd question does not skew the result.

What this does and does not tell you

These numbers measure word rarity, reading level and length. Those are good predictors of how hard a test feels, but they are not student scores, and they do not guarantee the same result on test day. Use the practice tests to build stamina and find gaps.

Primary-grade tests are not included, because ERB publishes no official material at that level to compare against.
